2005 Australian Coral Reef Society conference
The call for papers for the 2005 Australian Coral Reef Society conference is now open. Below is a summary of the conference and more details can be found on our website at www.australiancoralreefsociety.org Membership forms are also available on the website.
81st Australian Coral Reef Society Annual Conference at Heron Island Research Station
Managing and researching reefs in a changing world
Heron Island Research Station will be hosting the 81st ACRS Conference in August this year. The entire station is booked for what is likely to be the biggest conference ever held there. Due to generous sponsorship from CMS, AIMS, JCU, GBRMPA and Deep Oceans Expeditions, registrations have been subsidised, so that the affordable registration package includes transfers from Gladstone, accommodation at HIRS, all meals and attendance at the conference sessions.
There is an exciting line up of keynote speakers including Dr Chris Simpson who will discuss West Australian reefs, Prof Tony Larkum from The University of Sydney, Prof Ove Hoegh-Guldberg from the Centre for Marine Studies, UQ, Dr Pat Hutchings from the Australian Museum and a GBRMPA representative will give an update of the new GBRMPA rezoning.
The meeting will commence with the opening on the Friday night followed by dinner and welcome function. Contributed papers will be presented on
Saturday and Sunday with a barbecue and social function on the Saturday night. The Conference dinner and awards night will be held at the Heron Island Resort on the Sunday night.
Delegate excursions will be offered for the Monday and possibly Friday and will include a snorkeling trip at Heron Island or Wistari Reef, a SCUBA dive at Heron and an overnight trip to One Tree Island.
The call for papers is now open and we would like to receive your abstracts as soon as possible with the deadline for receipt of abstracts 1st June
2005.
Two workshops will be held at HIRS in the week following the conference. These are titled:
An Introduction to Molluscs; Their Diversity, Biology and Identification by Dr Winston Ponder from the Australian Museum
and
Taxonomy, Evolutionary Biology and Demography of Coral Reef Fishes by Prof Howard Choat.
The registration form will be available soon and we encourage you to register early as there is a cap on the number of delegates the Heron Island
Research Station can accommodate. Accommodation will also be available at Heron Island Resort at a room only rate, so this will be offered as a
separate rate of registration.
Please visit the conference website via the ACRS website at http://www.australiancoralreefsociety.org/
for further details. We look forward to receiving your abstracts soon.
