Today, UCS announced the twelve finalists in "Science Idol: the Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest." And now, it's your turn
to vote.

Today through September 30, anyone with an email address is eligible to choose his or her favorite cartoon at www.ucsusa.org/scienceidol. Each voter will automatically receive a chance to win one of fifty copies of the 2007 Defending Science calendar featuring all twelve finalists.

This summer, to draw attention to political interference in science, UCS invited amateur artists to submit cartoons addressing the impact of this misuse on our safety, health, and environment. UCS worked with a panel of highly accomplished cartoonists and cartoon editors - including two Pulitzer Prize winners - to narrow the field from hundreds of witty cartoons to the twelve finalists.

Artists of all ages from throughout the United States submitted cartoons criticizing criticizing the distortion, suppression, and manipulation of science on issues as diverse as global warming, public health research, and toxic mercury pollution. The artist who drew the finalist with the most votes at the end of September will receive a number of prizes, including $500 cash and an all-expenses paid trip to have lunch with the celebrity judge of the cartoonist's choice choice.

Contest judges included New Yorker cartoon editor Robert Mankoff; Philadelphia Inquirer cartoonist Tony Auth and Christian Science Monitor cartoonist Clay Bennett, both winners of the Pulitzer Prize; and Rhymes with Orange creator Hillary Price.
